‘I believe that PPLE effectively bridges gaps between disciplines and equips students with a broad range of methods to answer big societal questions.’
Sander Onderstal

Hello, I’m Sander

‘I was born and raised in the Netherlands and have lived here most of my life. I current live together with my girlfriend in Haarlem, where we raise our three children. We like living in Haarlem as it’s spacious, close to the beach and there is easy access to the lively city of Amsterdam.

In my down time I love watching movies looking for scenes that highlight fundamental economic concepts and principles. My favorite examples are from Dr. Strangelove, The Informant! and A Beautiful Mind. Although Hollywood sometimes seems to miss the point, I love to show scenes from such movies in my lectures.’

Academic Background

‘For my Bachelor's and Master's I studied Econometrics at the University of Tilburg. I chose Econometrics because I wanted to learn how to use mathematical models to find optimal solutions for everyday problems that arise in business and in the public sector. As I enjoyed my undergrad studies I decided to stay at the university and write a PhD thesis in auction theory.

After obtaining my PhD, and a short stay at the Dutch Central Planning Bureau, I came to the Econ department of the UvA in 2004. The department was (and is) attractive for me because it has a supportive research environment with many international students and also houses the largest economics lab in the Netherlands. My current teaching interests are industrial organizations and market design. When it comes to my research interests, I am currently looking into auctions, cartels and behavioral economics.’

About joining PPLE

‘I joined PPLE because I wanted to interact with students who have broader interests than only Economics and Business. I believe that PPLE effectively bridges gaps between disciplines and equips students with a broad range of methods to answer big societal questions. I encourage all PPLE students who are interested in economic research, regardless of their specialization, to sign up for economic experiments in our lab (www.creedexperiment.nl).’
