English language requirements

Applicants can demonstrate their English proficiency through either their preparatory education results or through a valid English proficiency exam. Information on exams we accept and the minimum scores required can be found below. Please note that the minimum required score and sub scores must be obtained on one single test. Combining scores and sub scores from different tests is not accepted to meet the English proficiency requirement. Candidates who are already meeting or expected to meet all of our minimum entry requirements at the time of application are given preference in our selection procedure. Therefore it is advised to take any supplementary test as soon as possible.

Requirements

  • Please refer to the entry requirements overview and check whether you are meeting the English proficiency requirement to PPLE College through your secondary education diploma*.
  • If your English grade is insufficient or if English is not included in your final exam you need to take a supplementary English proficiency test to meet the English language requirement.

*Please note that you are only exempted from a supplementary test if you obtained your diploma less than two years before the start of the programme.

Supplementary English proficiency exams

The specified scores below are minimum admissions requirements. Lower scores will not be accepted. If your scores are insufficient, you will need to retake the test. When you send in the results, please refer to the contact details of test centres below.

PPLE College only accepts sufficient test scores that have been obtained less than two years before the start of the programme. 

TOEFL

Required minimum test scores:

  • TOEFL iBT 1 - 6: minimum total score 5; minimum score for each test component (reading, listening, writing and speaking): 5.
  • TOEFL iBT 0 - 120: minimum total score 100; minimum score for the reading test 24, listening test 22, writing test 24 and speaking test 25. 

The TOEFL reporting number is 9011 - University of Amsterdam. Students will need to enter this code on their answer sheets when sitting the examination.

Other test versions or modules are not accepted. Examples of this include but are not limited to: TOEFL Home Edition, TOEFL MyBest Scores.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

IELTS

Required minimum test score:

  • IELTS academic: overall score of 7.0, and not more than one subscore on 6.5. All other subscores must be at least 7.0

Other test versions or modules are not accepted. Examples of this include but are not limited to: IELTS Indicator, IELTS One Skill Retake, IELTS Online Academic

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Cambridge

Required minimum test scores:

  • C1 Advanced (formerly known as CAE) or C2 Proficiency (formerly known as CPE): minimum score of 185 and a minimum of 180 on all subscores

It takes some time for the Cambridge results to be published, so make sure you book a test date that is early enough for the results to reach PPLE before July.

Cambridge English

Pearson

Required minimum test scores:

  • Pearson PTE Academic: minimum score of 76 overall and a minimum of 71 on all subscores

Language Cert 

Required minimum test scores:

  • Language Cert Academic: minimum score of 75 overall and a minimum of 70 on all subscores

 

You must make your own arrangements to take any of these tests, and pay any fee required. It takes some time for the results to be published, so make sure you book a test date that is early enough for the results to reach PPLE before July. 

Non-EEA applicants

For immigration purposes, all students who are required to apply for a visa or residence permit must demonstrate that they will meet the English proficiency requirement before 1 May. Thus you either need to provide PPLE College with sufficient test scores of one of the beforementioned test providers before this deadline, or your most recent secondary education transcript demonstrates that you will meet the English requirement through your diploma.
